Prison journalism: Journey of Rehabilitation and Transformation
Thabo Mthembu was incarcerated in Pollsmoor Prison from 2014 to 2019. Read Thabo’s story 'Journey of Rehabilitation and Transformation'. After four years in prison without incident or returning to prison, author's journey to restorative justice has taken place four years after her release. She credits her sister and Lisa, head of Restorative justice, for their support throughout this difficult period. Restorative Justice aims to empower individuals outside of the prison system and implement changes that will continue to occur over time. Some have already started programs in their communities, such as farming and hiking, which aim to empower youth to think differently and provide options that steer them away from the wrong path. Despite challenges, author believes that positive outcomes only occur through a positive mindset followed by actions.

After 4 years of being incarcerated and 1 year of awaiting trial, it has now been four years since my release without incident or returning to prison. I thank God, my higher power, and restorative justice for being there throughout the journey. It has not been an easy road to travel. I would like to thank my sister and Lisa, the head of restorative justice, for their support during this difficult time. I know that without them, I would have found myself back in prison a long time ago.
Hopefully, with awareness and more support, the changes that have started to occur in my personal life and in everyone else involved outside of the prison system and in restorative justice will continue to progress at a steady pace. Over time, these changes will have a bigger impact on the community and its members.
Some have already started programs in their own communities, such as farming and hiking programs that involve youth, educating and uplifting them to think differently and providing options that steer them away from the wrong path. These programs grant them positive alternatives for their future.
Growth and Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Members of the restorative justice organization have uplifted themselves through courses they’ve taken, as well as the life skills we’ve all been learning, including introspection and retrospection skills. We are all on a path of growth with the main mindset of a higher power being our pillar within the organization, granting purpose and hope in the greater scheme of things, even while facing great adversities.
There is hope no matter what challenges we face in life, and change is something we have the ability to adapt to, regardless of the circumstances. Positive outcomes occur only through a positive mindset followed by our actions.
