Wicklow woman Sandra Dunne is preparing for her tenth year volunteering for a ‘building blitz’ in a township near Cape Town in South Africa and has just released a charitable calendar, with the proceeds going to the charity Mellon Educate.

The photographer Sandra honed her skills during lockdown and found herself returning to nature with her trusty camera in hand to capture photos of Wicklow’s abundance of wildlife.

Sandra said: “Most of the images I captured of wildlife were taken in and about Wicklow, along the coast, at Broadlough and the East Coast Nature Reserve. The amount of beauty we have here right on our doorstep in Wicklow is unbelievable. I also visited the Salty Islands to get some pictures of the stunning looking puffins.

“I tend to bring my camera anywhere I am going just in case I see something I want to take a photo of. The calendar contains an image of a sheep staring back at the camera, which I actually took while I was at a football match my son was playing in. The calendar has over 50 images, all of which I took, apart from four landscape images which are from other photographers.”

Sandra released calendars in 2020 and 2021 to help raise funds for the cost of the new sports hall for East Glendalough School, which her son attends. Now her attention turns to Mellon Educate, who organise the volunteering trips to Africa.

“This will be my tenth time volunteering,” she said. “I first took part on 2010,and lockdown and Covid, meant we couldn’t go, but it’s just something I find so rewarding. The work carried out by Mellon Educate is phenomenal. This year I’m bringing my son Cillian (16) over with me just so he can share the amazing experience.”

Sandra’s calendar is available to purchase from Nick’s Coffee shop and The Sports Room in Wicklow town. Sandra will also be selling the calendars in-person at SuperValu in Wicklow town on Saturday, October 21.

The calendars are priced at €12 each or three for €30, with all the proceeds going towards Mellon Educate. Sandra heads out to South Africa for her tenth build in November.
