background

In 1488, the Portuguese Bartholomeus Diaz sailed to the southern tip of the African continent, and in 1497, Vasco da Gama sailed past it on his trip to India. However, it was only António de Saldanha who, in 1503, took anchor in the bay. A strong trade relationship developed between Europe and the Far East. However, the ships went to India for four to six months, and many of the seafarers suffered scurvy and other often fatal deprivation, because they lost the fresh food on their long voyage. Halfway between Europe and India, the Cape of Good Hope was ideally suited as a base station. In 1653 Jan van Rieebeck was sent on behalf of the Dutch East India Company and founded Cape Town as the first city in the later South Africa. One of the few remains of the early Cape Town is the Fort near Adderley Street (Castle of Good Hope). Over time, Cape Town became an important trading point and a starting point for the "Vortrekkers", the settlers who moved inland to explore and settle the rest of the country. Cape Town is therefore not wrongly called "Mother City".

Cape Town hosted the 2010 World Cup

arrival

By plane

The Cape Town International Airport (IATA code: CPT, ICAO code: FACT) is the second largest airport in South Africa and one of the most important on the continent. Nearly 8,000,000 passengers land each year on one of the two routes and the two terminals (international and domestic) provide a clear division of passenger routes. Almost all domestic airports, major cities in neighboring countries and some destinations in Europe, Asia and America are served directly.

The airport is not very nice but it is functional. In recent years, it has been massively expanded and has lost a lot of its charm. The refurbishments were completed shortly before the 2010 World Cup. The main road is now dominated by the huge car parks, which are located on the left and right of the Transport Plaza and provide more than 5800 parking spaces. In the central area of the Transport Plaza, there is also the center-located departure area. When you enter the terminal, the gates are on the left for all international departures, and on the right the gates are to the domestic destinations. The areas of arrival are located at the respective external edge of the terminals.

The airport is about 12 miles from the city center. The journey via the national road N2 takes about 30 minutes. At the moment there is no connection to the railway network and you can therefore only reach the airport by bus or car. At the airport, there are some car rental stations in the arrivals area, where there are also shuttle services to the city. There are also plenty of taxis in front of the terminal. However, you should be careful to use an official taxi - only Touch Down Taxis is allowed to drive around the airport. This may be a little more expensive at first, but it is definitely more reliable. For private taxis, you have to expect unnecessary detours to drive up the price.

The international route to London Heathrow is particularly important, but Frankfurt and Amsterdam are also connected daily to Cape Town. Most of the best routes are with South African Airways and Lufthansa, both of which are organized in the Star Alliance airline alliance and offer the most flights between Europe and South Africa (partly via Johannesburg). However, the best prices can often be obtained with one of the airlines from the "Gulf", which takes a long journey. Here is an overview of all airlines flying from outside Africa to the Cape.

Within Southern Africa, a number of airlines fly to and from Cape Town. The most popular route is to Johannesburg, followed by the route to Durban. Kulula and Mango are the local low-cost airlines, but they all have a very good safety record.

by train

The South African rail network is not comparable to Europe. Nevertheless, the railway company Shosholoza Meyl offers various services to Cape Town. You can reach Johannesburg and Durban by train in Cape Town. Because of the length of the lines, these are trains that usually run for more than a day. The trains therefore have different categories of loungers and a bistro car. If you choose the noble variant of the railway transport, you can use the famous Blue Train. The modern trains connect Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg with Cape Town. This formerly the most important link between South Africa's political and economic centers today is largely based on tourism. Unfortunately, the price/performance ratio is not correct for this connection, and the most beautiful sections are covered at night. As an alternative to the Blue Train, the lovers of the railway can take the steam trains from Rovos Rail to Cape Town. Partial sections are operated by steam locomotives. The sleeping cars are old cars that have been lovingly restored. The charm of these trains is undeniable and there are several stops along the way, for example in Kimberley near the Big Hole and in Matjesfontein. Cape Town's suburbs are within easy reach of the city's city center. They are cheap and relatively fast. But please don't save at the wrong end. The third class ticket should be forbidden. For visitors who do not look like South African and are immediately recognized as tourists, this may involve the loss of money and valuables.

By bus

All major international bus companies operate to Cape Town. Traveling to and from Cape Town is so easy to do. The main and largest companies are Greyhound Cityliner, Translux Intercity and Mainliner Intercape. Detailed information can be found on the websites of the companies. Cape Town's national bus station is next to the train station on Adderley Street. Cape Town is also served by BazBus. This is a bus company that is especially geared towards the needs of backpackers. The local bus network of Golden Arrow is not very well developed and unreliable. To get to the suburbs, you should take the suburbs of Metrorail, the taxi or the car rental. The MyCity Bus is a safe option for getting around Cape Town. There is a regular bus schedule with scheduled start and departure times, but you first have to buy a MyCity bus ticket.

On the street

  • The N1 passes through the Karoo to Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Tshwane (Pretoria) and from there to Harare in Zimbabwe. The Cape Town-Johannesburg route will take South Africans in about 24 hours. However, this is not recommended. Fatigue on a fairly monotonous route causes serious accidents. Every year, the accident statistics for Christmas prove this. Many would like to spend the Christmas holidays on the Cape and take a car in Jo'burg to get the route to Cape Town as soon as possible. This lawn is paid with death every year. If you want to get over this route quickly, you should use the plane. If you are a lover of the railways, you can choose from a variety of different connections. If you want to use your car, don't miss the sights along the route. Some jewels can be found there. For example the small town of Matjesfontein or Prince Albert or the Karoo National Park in Beaufort West. In any case, you should plan an overnight stay, for example in Kimberley or Bloemfontein.
  • The N2 leads along the coast to George, Port Elizabeth and Durban. You pass through the granary around Caledon and follow the Garden Route and the Tsitsikamma National Park.
  • The N7 connects Cape Town with the West Coast and is the direct link to Namibia. The route touches places such as Malmesbury, Citrusdal, Clanwilliam and Springbok. On the Orange River, the border to Namibia is reached. From the border continue via Keetmanshoop to Windhoek. The route to Windhoek can be reached in two days without having to rush too much.

By ship

Cape Town can also be reached by boat. Regular traffic is currently only maintained by the Royal Mail Ship St. Helena. RMS St. Helena runs from Portland (UK) to Cape Town up to twice a year. Tenerife, St. Helena, Ascension, Walvis Bay and Lüderitz are all on the way.

More frequent departures are offered by cargo ships. Depending on the route, they take some ports in Europe and then take a direct route to Cape Town. For example, the German Africa Line is the provider of such a trip. She works with the South African Safemarine.

If you prefer one of the luxury cruise ships, you can also choose from a wide range of options. Almost all the world-wide cruise companies travel to South Africa and Cape Town. For example, the Europe of Hapag Lloyd and the Queen Elizabeth 2 of the British Cunard Line have been more frequent guests in Cape Town. The -33.910649 18.4255551Cruise Terminal is just a few minutes away from V&A Waterfront.

A trip to the travel agency will help you choose the right boat trip. However, it is important to bear in mind that a boat trip takes a reasonable amount of time. The average journey time is at least 14 days. On a freighter, that means you can bring a lot of reading material. There is no entertainment program on board these vessels. However, the very close experience of a visit to Equatorial remains an experience that will never be forgotten.

mobility

map of Cape Town

MiniCabs are a nice, cheap but not always dangerous option. They are notoriously crowded and still never full. However, it also allows you to start nice conversations and meet people. In Cape Town it is generally not recommended (tourists) to use the minibuses after dusk, as there is an increased risk of being robbed.

The safest are official taxis. The price of kilometers is only about 10 edges. The city center is also easily explored by foot - which is true again during the day and at night only in the lively pubs and tourist areas.

The taxi service from "Uber" or "Taxify" is the most recommended and reasonably priced. Especially at night it is the best option.

If you want to be independent, you should book a rental car in your home country. This way you can move around freely and take excursions to the surrounding area. The internationally renowned car rental companies are also present in Cape Town. There are also local, small owners of cars that are older but well maintained. An example of well-maintained, low-cost car rental is "Penny KS" (translated in approximately "cheap kilometers"). If you like it even more adventurous (just for a few months), rent a beetle ("beetle"), which was also built by VW in South Africa and are still often found in the townscape.

Please note! Petrol stations rarely accept credit cards. Almost always you have to pay in cash or with a fuel card. Some car rental companies in their home country have a fuel card automatically included in the package. The fuel is then billed with the car rental company in South Africa. In Cape Town, for example, the Caltex petrol station near the Audi Center on the Waterfront (Coen Steytler Avenue) accepts credit cards; For the sake of security, we should ask again here.

Note: In South Africa there is no self service at service stations! You drive up to the column and wait for an employee to get to the driver's window. He asks about the type of syringe (usual answer: "Ninety-five, unleaded" or "Ninety-five, leaded", i.e. "Super Unbleit" or "Super Verbleit" - the "95" means the octane number), then either for how much you want to recharge ("for 100 rand") or for full, please. After that, it is usually asked whether the oil and cooling water should be checked ("Check oil and water"), which can usually be denied. It is almost impossible to prevent the almost obligatory cleaning of the windows by a second employee and often also the inspection of the air pressure by a third party. These (albeit unsolicited) services should be paid directly for the employees with about 2 border extra cash.

activities

You can do wonderful excursions in and around Cape Town. But the city and the surrounding mountains also have something to offer!

hiking

  • A hike to the Tafelberg mountain is particularly popular with visitors and locals (alternatively also descending). Although it is very strenuous and not recommended during the lunch season, especially during the summer months, the view is spectacular. We leave the car park of the cable car station (signpost "Cable Car"). You should spend at least three hours climbing and if possible not go alone. Every year, tourists crash at the wrong time of the day (midday heat) or during bad weather conditions. Due to the sometimes strong winds, helicopter rescue cannot be possible. But if you take enough water with you and don't overload yourself, you can experience a wonderful hike through the vegetation. Several vendors (e.g. Abseil Africa) also offer guided walks.
  • If you like it a bit more cozy, you can walk up and around the signal Hill.
  • The most popular hike among the capitals is the Lions Head. The special thing is that you can walk around the mountain, which offers a 360° view of the most famous sights of Cape Town. From here you can admire the Table Mountain, the city center, the signal Hill, Robben Island, the Waterfront and the mountain chain 12 apostles with Camps Bay. The "Full Moon" hikes or sunset/ascent hikes are particularly popular. To get to the starting point, go to the "Kloof Nek" and then take the road towards Signal Hill - the Lions Head is in front of the signal Hill. The walk to Lions Head takes about 1.5 hours, with sporting people taking 1 hour. It is advisable to bring a shoe with you, as the last piece goes up a bit steeper over a ladder. In addition, for safety reasons, it is recommended to take the hikes in a group.

rope

Abseiling takes place almost daily in summer near the mountain station of the Tafelbergbahn. This is one of the longest and highest routes in the world and is commercially available for ropes. A well-known supplier is Abseil Africa.

diving

Cape Town is located on two oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean is very cold (about 10°C), with cold water corals and kelp forests where seals are found. The Indian Ocean is a little warmer, so you can see the colder fish here.

accommodation

A good "atlas" of accommodations across the country is offered by the three-volume, free-of-charge series of so-called "portfolio" books, which are also available online. They are divided into "simple" ("the bed and breakfasts"), "medium" ("guest houses") and "luxury" ("game lodges"), although even the "simple" B&B are usually very luxurious and should not be confused with a German hotel of a cheap chain. The "portfolio" is a good way to travel; you can estimate at about noon where you will be around in the evening and make a phone call about which accommodation is still available (for example on the Garden Trail if you want to take your time). Note: This approach is not recommended during the high season, so you should book here what is already going on in Germany with the help of the website.

work

To work in South Africa, you have to meet a few conditions. A work permit is required. The best way to address this is to contact the South African embassy in the home country. If you are interested in studying in South Africa, you should check out the possibilities offered here at your university or directly at the DAAD. The embassy will then also be contacted to obtain a residence and work permit. There are also student exchange programs.

safety

Cape Town is in an emerging country. This should not be forgotten when considering the security situation. However, this is being overdramatically highlighted in the European media and is therefore not in line with reality. But of course, Cape Town also has townships that are not harmless. If you want to get an insight into the life of a township, you can do so on guided tours.

As in all cities in the world, there is petty crime in Cape Town. Please don't display the expensive video equipment and all the family decorations. It is not obvious whether it is a fashion jewelry or something valuable. For this reason, it is as simple and unspectacular as possible to avoid being recognized as a tourist as soon as possible. After office hours and on Sundays, you should not walk in the city center or walk through parks. It is best to take a taxi for short trips. However, there are exceptions to this, such as the entertainment areas on Longstreet, Seapoint, Waterfront or Observatory. You can find further security information on the website of the Foreign Office.

Great care is also taken at night on Longstreet. There is no risk of being the victim of a violent crime. However, there are a lot of pickpockets on the way, which (pr.o. if you're very drunk!) you can clean your pockets quickly. The risk continues to rise, the later, or sooner in the morning. The best way to party on Longstreet is to bring money (no phones or credit cards).

health

In general, this topic is subject to a visit to the family doctor before the start of the trip. Only a doctor may give appropriate medical information.

Cape Town and the Western Cape Province are malaria-free. All the means to do so must be at home. Vaccines are not required.

If you need a doctor in Cape Town, you can contact Dr. Pieper. Dr. Pieper speaks German and has his practice very centrally on Kloofnek Road.

The health care in South Africa is excellent and the hospitals in Cape Town are very well equipped. It should never be forgotten that the first heart transplant was carried out in Cape Town. But there is a big difference between private and government hospitals. To get a German standard, you should definitely go to a non-state hospital.

There are also many small private clinics for cosmetic surgery. There is currently a big trend towards medical tourism in South Africa.

Practical information

The people in Cape Town and the surrounding area are very friendly and helpful. It is also more common than you think someone who speaks a little German. You can always orientate yourself at the Tafelberg mountain in the center. The actual town is relatively small and manageable. It's only when you want to go to the many suburbs that it gets more complicated. Please don't drive into all suburbs unprepared. Unfortunately, there are areas where a tourist should not stay. By the way, there's Miami and New York, so it's not a South Africa-specific problem. It is best to ask the hotel staff or other locals. Practitioners of the globe often recognize where they can move and where they can't without this information. A trip to Cape Town will certainly offer something Africa combined with something Europe. To start a trip to Africa is a must. If you don't trust yourself, you can book guided tours.

It is difficult to find a post office in Cape Town, as they are often located in hidden places. However, if you are near a major square or a shopping center, you can expect a post office to be nearby. It is worth noting that the post offices in South Africa open late and close early!

communication

In the city center and the surrounding area, you can enjoy English as a tourist. Even if many Cape Towers speak as Africa's or Xhosa's mother tongue, English is the language that binds everyone. Of course, if you can get a few more pieces of the other language, that's always nice. Certainly, the petrol station attendant (a black man in 99.99%) is happy about a friendly Mola ("Hello") if you want to use his services. In general, the people of Cape Town are very polite and friendly.

Since a steady stream of German immigrants has flooded into the Cape region since the last centuries, it is not uncommon to encounter German-speaking people, even if the least one expects. However, it is in the tourist industry that Germans run a guesthouse or a souvenir shop abound. In addition, many white German ancestors or know a German in the neighborhood. In some schools German courses are also offered.

excursions

peninsula

Day trips:

  • to the cape peninsula (Cape Pensinsula), through Hout Bay and over Chapman's Peak Drive to visit the Cape of Good Hope
  • A day on the beach of Boulder's Beach (with penguins!) close to Simon's Town, Muizenberg, Blouberg (magnificent Table Mountain Panorama) or the beach
  • Guided tours in the townships of Cape Town, e.g. Langa, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu or Nyanga.
  • Cape Winelands - Wine-growing areas around Durbanville, ?? ?? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
  • West Coast National Park is located about 120 km north of Cape Town. It is well known for its flowering after the winter rains. Then true flowerbeds lay over the land. But it is also worth visiting the rest of the year. You can swim in the Langebaan Lagoon or take long hours of hikes on almost unspoiled beaches. There are also many turtles and numerous bird species.

Cape Town as the starting/ending point for long journeys:

From Cape Town there are many paths leading to the world. If you are in South Africa for a short time, you may be flying from here to Durban or to the Kruger National Park. By car, you can continue to Namibia along the west coast, explore the interior of the country through the Karoo or drive along the south coast to the southernmost point of Africa and the Garden Route. If you are the last to visit Cape Town on your trip through southern Africa, you will hopefully be able to catch the plane with great memories and look forward to your next trip to Africa.
